Idiopathic Hypersomnia
Sleep Awareness Week is coming up soon, April 23-29, and the slogan is “Sleep Better. Feel Better.” A great night’s sleep not only makes us feel better, but it also improves our health. We are here today to promote improved understanding of a rarely diagnosed, often misunderstood, serious neurological sleep disorder, known as idiopathic hypersomnia (IH). The hallmark symptom of IH is excessive daytime sleepiness, even with a full night’s slumber. This central disorder of hypersomnolence (CDH) negatively impacts patients’ lives, as they are often unable to function at work, at school, with machinery (e.g., driving), and in relationships. Join Catherine Page-Rye (Cat Rye), co-founder and a Board of Director of the Hypersomnia Foundation, as she educates us, raises awareness, and spreads hope across America and on a global scale about IH. Let’s get #BeyondSleepy!

Great job & good luck
Thank you for the info. I have been dealing with this (or some form) for 60 yrs. and I am now 65. I do have a story to tell of the trials and tribulations I have endured over six decades. My failures and accomplishments, and how I achieved them.
thank u. been diagnosed with this and not one person takes it seriously besides my husband who sees me sleep. I’ve slept v (one time) for FIVE DAYS without having woken up for food, drink, bathroom, NOTHING! ! it’s very common for me two to three days of sleeping. one thing I have high anxiety around is bed time. I’m never sure nor can I promise when I’ll wake up after I enter sleep (which I personally termed “hibernation” for my episodes)
Hi, Andrea- Thanks for taking time to listen and share your story here.
Hi,
I have struggled with sleep for years. My last hibernation as I call it was for almost two days. I slept for about 18 hours, got up to make myself eat and drink something, make a restroom stop, and then back to sleep. I slept for about 19 hours. I then was awake for about 10 hours and then back to sleep for 5 hours. Then awake for two hours and falling asleep again!
I have slept for days without eating, drinking or even getting up to pee! This disorder is ruining my life.

Thank you for listening and for sharing your experience. Hopefully some of the resources Cat spoke about can offer a measure of relief. CW
